Hello Neighbor Review: Hide and Seek with AI

Hello Neighbor is a stealth horror from a Russian development company Dynamic Pixels. In this game, you have to find out what dark secrets your neighbor hides: sneak into his house and try to get to the basement unnoticed. AI runs the neighbor's actions; it quickly learns and sets traps throughout the house. Download Hello Neighbor and test the strength of your nerves.

Graphics 3/5

The game is made in a catchy cartoon style. There are many deformed objects in the game, which makes the world looks a bit psychedelic. Unfortunately, the graphics are far from being perfect technically and full of bugs. E.g., a ball rolls on a flat surface, the main character can jump up about 10 meters. And anything can get stuck in the walls: a plate, a chair, and even the neighbor himself.

Gameplay 5/5

The Hello Neighbor gameplay is original and differs from other games of this genre. Your hero witnessed strange behavior from his neighbor and decided to find out what was the matter. You need to fully explore his house, collect useful items, and solve puzzles to move from room to room. What exactly you need to do, you have to find out empirically, because in the game there are no instructions or tips.

The main emphasis the developers made on AI learning. If the neighbor catches you, you will have to start the game from the very beginning. However, you cannot go the same way as the first time, because the neighbor has already set traps for you. Try to be as quiet as possible so as not to attract the neighbor's attention. If he still chased after you, stun him and try to escape. You can hide in the closet and wait for him to leave, or distract his attention by throwing some object.

As you move through the location, you face so-called "fears". These are individual levels or mini-games, for the passage of which you can get additional skills. Fight the Fear Darkness, and your character will get the double jump power-up; overcome the Fear Supermarket, and you will get the invisibility skill.

Controls 4/5

The Hello Neighbor Xbox One controls are carried out using a gamepad, and it will take some time to get used to it. Unfortunately, you can't customize controls as you like. You have separate buttons to run, sneak, jump, and interact with objects.

Replay Value 3/5

Some puzzles in the game are so tricky that you will spend a lot of time trying to solve them. Or you may even have to look for Hello Neighbor review in search of an answer. And also, most likely, you will be caught several times by the neighbor, so that you will have to start the location again several times. But if you decide to replay Hello Neighbor again from the very beginning, you will not see anything new: neither in the plot nor in the puzzles.

The Bottom Line

Hello Neighbor is a good stealth horror with a fascinating story and many puzzles. An interesting feature of the game is that it was created in close collaboration with fans and streamers. Now on the Internet, you can find and download Hello Neighbor alpha and beta versions. However, a large number of bugs in graphics and game mechanics prevent you from enjoying the game to the full.

Conclusion

Hello Neighbor is a mix of an interesting story, a tense atmosphere, challenging puzzles with a bunch of minor bugs and flaws. Is it worth downloading the game, you decide.

Pros:

  • Lots of puzzles
  • Nice visual style

Cons:

  • Some puzzles are too difficult
  • Tons of bugs
